  • The scene represented here is the encounter between the dead Amphimedon and the dead King Agamemnon, who is questioning Amphimedon: "What laid you low" (24. 117). This is an essential scene in book 24 because it not only reveals how the suitors blame Odysseus' wife for their deaths but also reveals Agamemnon's happiness that Odysseus took his advice on keeping his true identity a secret when he returned to Ithaca.
  • The scene represented here is the emotional reunion of Odysseus and his father, Laertes' who "threw his arms around his own dear son" (24. 387). This is an important scene in book 24 because as long as Odysseus had been missing at sea is how long Odysseus's father has been in deep mourning and grief. Ever since his son got lost at sea, Laertes fell into a deep depression, believing that his beloved son had died a horrible death. However, in this scene, Laertes' beliefs are proved false as he reunites with his son Odysseus, who is alive and well and embraces him after many years.
  • The scene here shows a once-angry mob of Ithacans fleeing from Odysseus as Athena shouts, "you men of Ithaca...Break off-shed no more blood-make peace at once" (24. 585). This is an important scene in book 24 because the angry mob of civilians was the last major conflict Odysseus faced to achieve a sense of peace for himself in his homeland. Fortunately, Odysseus had some help accomplishing this goal as Athena managed to scare away the angry mob and advised Odysseus on how to establish peace among the civilians of Ithaca to prevent further bloodshed.
