On August 24, 1814, Britain attacked Washington D.C., setting the U.S. Capital and the White House on fire. Dolly Madison saved many artifacts and historical documents from the White House. In the outcome of this event, British severely damaged the Capitol and the White House.

From September 12-15 of 1814 British attacked the fort that protects Baltimore, Maryland called Fort McHenry. Also, Francis Scott Key viewed the battle from a British ship in the harbor. the significance of this event is that after the battle ended Francis Scott Key wrote a poem about the battle. Later, the poem was published in newspapers and set to music. Finally, this is now our national anthem: "The Star Spangled Banner"

On December 24, 1814, the war of 1812 ended and both countries signed the Treaty of Ghent. In the outcome of this there was no clear winner that was acknowledged. Also, Britain promises they won't search U.S. ships for deserters. Also, America promises to respect British rule of Canada. Finally, America proves they could protect their independence.
