  • One major theme of "The monsters are due on maple street" by Rod Sterling is that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. For example, on page 72 Charlie and Steve were going to go to the police station because the power was out. Charlie thought that they would look crazy because he thought it was a simple power outage. It turns out later in the story even things that didn't require electricity wouldn't even turn on and that it was the whole town. It was also caused by supernatural things. Another reason the theme of the story is don't judge a book by its cover is that when Tommy was saying that it might have been aliens. On page 74 Tommy said "Mr. Brand! Please dont leave here, You might not even be able to get out of town. It was that way in the story." All the residents jokingly laughed it off. He said this because people all getting worried and he found it in a comic book. The adults thought he was acting delusonal but they jokingly went to go look for aliens and there actually was aliens but they didn't find them. The last reason is that when charlie shot Pete Von Horn. Pete Von horn was their neighbour who went looking if the power outage wasn't only in their area of the town and when he came back at night all the residents and Charlie didn't think of who it could be and Charlie shot him. They didn't figure out after they shot him that it was Pete and after the neighbours turned on charlie who shot him. In conclusion One of the many themes for the story "The Monsters are due on maple street" is that you should judge a book by its cover.
