- "This morning, I was lookin' in the mirror and thinking about it... I'm 35 years old; I been married 11 years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live.

- "Listen, I'm going to be a doctor. I'm not worried about who I'm going to marry yet- if I even get married."
- Mama
- "Been thinking that we maybe could meet the notes on a little old two-story somewhere, with a yard where Travis could play in the summertime, if we use part of the insurance for a down payment and everyday kind of pitch in."
- Walter was thinking about how him and his family need a better lifestyle.
- After mama tells her that she should marry George, she lets her know she isn't concerned about that because first she wants to make her dream come true of becoming a doctor.
