  • When people think about men and mental illness, they often don't see them going together. Men are often known to be emotionless, and never to be vulnerable especially when it comes to mental illness. There is a common theme for men to keep their problems to themselves and deal with it alone.
  • Question to the viewer.
  • A man living his everyday life at work with a mental illness.
  • Many men live every day with a mental illness but do not speak up because that is not the "manly" thing to do, or because they are afraid to open up.
  • The most common mental illnesses within men are, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, PTSD, and substance abuse (1).
  • The pointing is meant to represent stigma towards mens mental illness.
  • When not treated, these mental illnesses can be very damaging. This is shown through, suicide, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and many other ways (2). In Canada, 75% of all suicides are men, men have 3 times the chance to experience substance abuse, and 81% of drug overdoses are men (2).
  • Why is it that we see men suffering from mental illnesses at such a high rate and nobody including men really talk about it?
  • Why is this?
  • When people look at men's mental illness there is a stigma associated with it. This stigma represents toxic masculinity (3). Many men are brought up as children to keep quiet about their problems and be strong about it (3). This makes for many men wanting to stay manly by not getting help for their mental illnesses.
