  • Sonnet 71 by William Shakespeare uses the poetic device of contrast. Throughout this sonnet, he contrasts death and love. In this sonnet, he is implying that the love of someone will soon die down as well as the death of that loved one. He is contrasting these two terms by implying they both will soon be alike but with two different meanings. As someone is forgotten the love for that person is soon over. This contrast helps his sonnet contain meaning and concrete what he is saying.
