The cheese sandwich starts its journey by going into your mouth. Your teeth then break the cheese sandwich down. Your saliva in your mouth contains enzymes. This enzyme breaks starch down into glucose. This makes it easier to digest and swallow

Now the food travels to the small intestine. Here it is digested into more small molecules and are also put in blood. The molecules that are insoluble are pushed into the large intestine.

The food then travels into your oesophagus. This is a long tube leading from your mouth to your stomach. It takes less than 2 seconds to take this journey.
In the large intestine most of the fibres are found here. The waste material in the large intestine is called faeces. If you have too much water in the faeces you have the risk of getting diarrhea. If you have too little water you can get constipation

In 5 seconds the food will enter the stomach. Acid is in the stomach which kills the harmful micro organisms. The stomach contains many enzymes which break down the food into small molecules which are absorbed in the small intestine. The stomach also contains bile.
Last of all when you go to the toilet it will come out.
