Storyboard Text

  • I don't really understand the cell cycle, do you?
  • Yes, maybe a little review will help you, lets go!
  • Where are we going?
  • We are going to visit the different stages of the cell cycle. The cell cycle is split into four main parts, G1, S, G2 and M. Lets go to G1 first.
  • So it is a bit like the cars on this bridge, they are going to travel across the bridge as they do normally. However, there may be a checkpoint on the bridge or before it to ensure the car is eligible to pass through to the other side.
  • So here in G1 is where a cell carries out its normal function. They also grow and replicate their organelles. In G1 there is an important check point that cells must go through before they can proceed to the S stage, synthesis.
  • In this factory, things are put together to make a whole, just like in the synthesis phase of the cell cycle, during this phase, the cell makes a copy of its DNA and by the end, has two complete sets of DNA
  • No...I think we should leave that up to the cells.
  • Cool! Can we make a DNA copy while we are here?
  • In a classroom, you check your work before you turn it into your teacher for it to be graded right?
  • Well that is like the G2 phase, here, the cells continue to grow but the undergo a crucial checkpoint to make sure everything is right with the cell before it goes through mitosis.
  • Yup.
  • So what happens in mitosis?
  • Throughout G1, S, and G2, the cell has been in interphase, here the cell has grown, undergoes DNA replication and prepared for mitosis. and cytokinesis.
  • Lets hop on the bus so I can show you.
