- After moving from china to san Fernando because she lost everything. Her husband, her two daughters, and her house because of the Vietnam war. A couple years after she moves she gets a new husband and has a daughter named Jing-mai. While their sitting watching TV the mother believes that her child can be the next Shirley temple.

- After seeing her mothers disappointed face day after day something died inside of her, her hope. she realized that she hated the test, her mother was always so excited to see if her daughter could do something only for the daughter to not be able to do it and dissipoint her face once again. One day after the so called test she looked in the mirror, wondering why she wasn't enough. She was angry at her self, she was yelling and screeching trying to scratch her face off only to realize that she would always be just an ordinary kid in the eyes of her mother.

- After about a year of piano her mother puts her in a talent show. Jing-mai goes out their thinking that she looks buitifuel and shes even kidnsa excited. When she first starts playing shes butiufel, but note after note she messes up and stats embarrising herself. She gets off stage and barly anyone is clapping, everyone in the crowed is taling about how at least she tried and are whispering about her.. She gets off stafe feling embarrased and wants to cry.

- On the way home from the talent show Jing-mai mother is quiet, until they reach the house. Jing-mai has decided that she doesn't want to be her mothers slave anymore and quiets piano. As Jing-mai is watching TV her mother shuts the TV off and yanks Jing-mai by her arm dragging her up from the floor. Jing-mai mother tries dragging her towards the piano. The mother had a smile on her face like she was enjoying seeing her child miserable.

- After the big argument she quit piano. over the years she realized that she failed as a daughter. She had only realized how bad she really was. Every time she walked into the living room with the piano she rembers the words of her mother saying your a quick learner.
- jing-mai had got the computer tuned and everything. She sat down to play debating if she could. Once she started to play she realized the song pleading child came back and was easy to play. She realized the two half's of the song pleading child and perfectly contented where two half's of the same song. Those 2 songs represented her childhood, it took her to grow up to realize it.
