Storyboard Text

  • Reverend Parris is crying beside his daughter, Betty, as she has fallen ill and has not woken up. He begins to start questioning Abigail, his niece, about what she and Betty had done.
  • Parris had seen them dancing around in the woods with a naked woman running past. The townspeople started rumors about how they may be witches, something Abigail vehemently denies.
  • John Proctor, a charismatic farmer, is revealed to have had an affair with Abigail. Though Abigail loves him deeply, he wants to stay truthful to his wife. He sternly rejects her advances.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Putnam revealed that they had 8 children together, but only one survived. They believe it a was witchcraft that killed their children and that witchcraft is also the cause of Betty's illness
  • Reverend Hale was called to look at Betty's condition, and while he was there, Tituba was being questioned. Abigail had said that she was with the girls in the forest. Tituba was told to confess to witchcraft or be hanged, to which she started to accuse other townspeople of witchcraft too.
  • As Tituba accuses more people, Abigail joins in, naming more people. Betty also wakes up, shouting the names of more people. Reverend Hale is surprised to see them all shouting, while Parris is happy to see Betty awake. Act 1 ends with the girls accusing multiple people of witchcraft.
