- On November 9, the government communist surrendered to popular pressure by opening its entire border with the West. Many family and friends were reunited. Then people on both sides started tearing it down, soon the government had ordered the rest of the wall to be torn down. This wall was a symbol of the Cold War and was no longer there.
- In 1971, Erich Honecker became head of the Communist Party In East Germany. To rule the nest 18 years, he used the secret police. Later in 1989 the popular unrest led many east germans to flee their country. Then later that year mass demonstrations against the regime broke out in the fall of 1989.
- In the 1990's during the East Germany's first free elections, 50 percent of the vote was from the Christian Democrats. They supported the political union with the West. Soon in October there was a reunification of West and East Germany. This reunification of West and East Germany to form one Germany had seemed impossible but soon became reality by the end of 1990.
