  • The year was 1606, our newest king, James I, wanted to renew our quest for a colony. Several merchants, including me, pressed King James for a charter. December, 1606, I left england with 143 others to go to North America. We wanted to search for fish and furs. We took 3 ships, 48 people in each.
  • April 1607, me and the others arrived at Chesapeake bay. We then sailed up a river. The river was flowing into the bay. We decided to name the river The James. The river brought us to a nice area of land, that would be our new town. Or as we know it, Jamestown
  • We didnt find any gold or riches. Instead many of us faced hardships. Those hardships being disease and hunger. Some would get so hungry they would resort to cannibalism. A big reason we survived the first 2 years was because of Captain John Smith who forced us to work he also got us food from the local Powhatan people.
  • In late 1609, Captain John Smith got injured and had to return to England. After he left we struggled. The Powhatan stopped givving us food. The winter of 1609-1610 was hard, it was also called The Starving Time. Somehow we survived this time. More colonists arrived to take place of those who had died.
  • After Smith left, we figured out how to get money for the investorers. That being planting and growing tobacco. Alot of people made money that way. Including me.
  • Our relations with the Powhatan improved. They did so because John Rolfe and Pochontas got married.
