- The Black South African Students were forced to go to worse schools than their white counterparts. The students in Soweto, the South West township of Johannesburg were especially outraged with the lack of resources, bad teacher, and having to learn AfriKaans even though it was not spoken anywhere else in the world.

- In June of 1976, The Soweto students had a huge demonstration against Afrikaans instruction. The government answered this with armed forced.
- We deserve a better education
- The movement spread among students all over central Africa. Many students were arrested, tortured, and sometimes killed in prison. By the end, close to 600 people were killed and almost 2500 were injured.
