  • Early morning.Nya stands in a small kitchen, still in pajamas, one hand holding a coffee that’s gone cold. Her child’s backpack sits on the floor. Dinner from last night was accidentally left out. Nya’s face looks tired but focused.
  • Slide: 2
  • Later that day.Students talk over each other. A phone buzzes on a desk. Students aren't paying attention. Nya stands at the front with a stack of papers, trying to keep order. Her expression is controlled, but her eyes show exhaustion.
  • "'Mornin, class. Pull out your pens. Pop quiz today.'" pg.11
  • *Students groan*
  • Slide: 3
  • Teachers’ lounge.Nya and Dun sit across from each other at a small table. Papers are stacked messily in front of Nya. A single cigarette rests between her fingers, unlit. Her posture is tense, but Dun has a half-smile on his face, relaxed.
  • "'Got ten minutes before my next class. You sure you don't have a smoke? I really need it. Today. I need it today.'" pg. 26
  • "Dun reaches in his pocket and tosses her a pack. She takes out a cigarette and places the pack on the table." pg.26

  • Nya on the phone with Xavier
  • "'Hey it's me. I know I shouldn't...It's about our son
  • He got in a fight. They're going to...they are talking about kicking him out
  • They're talking about pressing charges. I'm exhausted. You know that?

  • [Then randomly enthusiastic ]
  • So anyway! Give me a call back when you get a moment. So we can talk. Talk about. Your son. Our son, Us...
  • [Long awkward pause]
  • Yep. Okay. Bye.
  • [Quick pause]
  • I um... I also miss you.

  • F***. I shouldn't have said that.
  • [She deletes the voice message]
  • Hey Xavier, it's Nya. Calling to talk to you about our son. Give me a callback when you get this.
  • [She says professionally]

  • "'Mr. Joseph, your perspective is mandatory here. Tell the class your perspective , or take a zero for the day.'"
  • Nya and Omari are at home but his thoughts go back to school.

  • Nya, a public school teacher, sends her son Omari to a private school in hopes of shielding him from a broken education system.

  • When Omari reacts to bullying with violence, he faces serious consequences that could change his life forever.
  • Schools often punish Black students instead of supporting them, pushing them closer to the school-to-prison pipeline.
