Would you like to join me in my exploration of identifying appropriate test statistics involving population mean?
Why don't we go in my classroom?
If the population standard deviation is known, use the z-test
A random variable that is calculated from sample data and is used in hypothesis test is called a test statistic.
It is used to reject or accept the null hypothesis
The mean has a normal distribution
To know which test statistic to use, you must consider if the population standard deviation or variance is known or unknown
If the population standard deviation is unknown, use the t-test
The mean has a t-distribution
In Central Limit Theorem, if the sample size is large, then we use the z-test
Identifying Appropriate Test Statistic
Even if the population standard deviation is not known, we can still use the z-score if we would replace the population standard deviation with its estimate--the sample standard deviation
That concludes our lessom for today
Until next time, students!
