- Amir betrays Hassan by planting his birthday gifts under Hassan's mattress to frame him for stealing. He does this hoping that Baba will be angry with Hassan and Ali and fire them, and he wouldn't have to see Hassan and feel his guilt over Hassan's unwavering loyalty.
- I'm going to put my watch and money under Hassan's bed to get rid of him
- To Amir's surprise, Baba isn't angry with Hassan and doesn't fire Hassan and Ali. Hassan realizes that Amir has betrayed him by trying to frame him for stealing, yet he still remains loyal because he knows that if he admits that he did not steal Amir's gifts, Amir would be in trouble instead.

- We're very sorry that Hassan stole your son's watch and money
- Hassan tells Ali everything that happened and they decide to leave. Hassan had begged Ali not to tell Baba that Amir had framed him because he was so loyal to Amir, even though he knew that Amir did not return the loyalty to him and instead wanted only validation from his father. Amir realized that no matter what he tried to do to Hassan he would always stay loyal to him and Ali decides they need to leave to protect Hassan from Amir.
