On the first day of school William's mom packed him lunch, rice, char siu, and bok choy. Food that always reminded him of his grandmother's cooking.

Yiep
In class, William was still figuring out his identity. He chose to write his name as Yiep instead of Diep, wanting to appear more Chinese. He felt that being Vietnamese was seen as being a lower class Asian.

Gross
Then at lunch, he opened his homecooked meal. A classmate sitting at the same table made fun of the smell and told him to leave. This left him feeling ashamed.

He closed his container and walked away without eating. Something that felt completely normal to him was seen as strange and out of place at school.

Later that evening his parents came home exhausted from work. They did not say much but had only asked him if he had eaten. William said "Yes, but I am still hungry". His mom without hesitation went to the kitchen to cut fruit for him.

That was when he recognized his family's sacrifice. Even though they were tired, they still provided and cared for him, to give him the best shot at school. Taking that to heart, he vowed to make their sacrifice worth it and that served as his motivation to be successful.
