  • A giraffe natural selection comic strip
  • Natural selection is a process by which a species changes over time in response to changes in the environment , or competition between organisms, in order for the species to survive .
  • A great example of natural selection is the growth of giraffe's neck
  • Giraffes have always been known for having long necks. But they didn't always have that. Over time, the giraffe's neck has grown upon generation and evolved to help them feed. Here is how the giraffe contributes to natural election.
  • A long time ago, there were giraffes the size of deers and with shorter sized necks.
  • The giraffe had trouble getting to their food on the top of the tree. The giraffes would have to reach to lowest bushes in order to receive the food.
  • Over time, the giraffes neck gradually got longer and longer each day which evolved into the long neck giraffe as we know today.
  • The accepted theory on giraffe evolution is that the giraffes with the longest necks passed on their genes through natural selection, and that it took millions of years to get the animal we see now.
  • Giraffes grew to have a large neck by stretching towards branches on trees. By continually doing this, they not only stretched their own necks to be longer but then passed the growth they received in life to their offspring, giving the progeny long necks as well.
