Storyboard Text

  • Settling Pennsylvania
  • I, William Penn, established the colony of Pennsylvania between 1681-1682, with the King's permission. This was called the "Holy Experiment."
  • Quakers and Europeans came to Pennsylvania seeking religious freedom. In 1682, a law was passed in Pennsylvania, that peope of all religions would be treated equally.
  • We, the 15,000 Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape tribe occupied this land before the British claimed it.
  • Government in the Colonies
  • I, the king did not often interfere with the colonies, so the colonies were almost independent in their government system.
  • The King selected colonial governers that could overule the general assemblies.
  • White landowning men, like myself, could vote to ellect the colonial government
  • General Assemblies: elected by colonists to make laws
  • We, the Colonists, will smuggle tea to avoid paying taxes, and boycott. We continue to say "No taxation without representation!"
  • Townshend Act
  • 1767
  • We, the British, begin taxing British imports for the colonists. Taxes were placed on everyday things such as glass, tea, lead, paint and paper.
