- King Lear decides that he will share his kingdom up between his 3 daughters. Beforehand, he asks all of them to profess their deep love for him. Regan and Goneril stroke his ego and are each given 1/3rd of the kingdom.

- Lear asks his favorite child, Coredlia, for her response. She is brutally honest to Lear, not appealing to his ego and telling him that she cannot love him any more than she is supposed to. An enraged Lear banishes Cordelia

- Kent, Lear's loyal pawn, pleads with Lear to rethink his decision: See better, Lear, and let me still remainThe true blank of thine eye (I.i 160-161).An enraged Lear once again cusses and banishes Kent for speaking back to him. is not gone within six days.

- Notkent, weird name. But yes, I allow you to serve me!
- Edmund, Gloucester's illegitimate son, plots against Edgar, his brother. He writes a fake letter claiming to be an Edgar who wants hifa ther dead.
- At Goneril's castle, she plots for a way to make King Lear leave, as he is currently staying with her. She complains to Oswald, her steward, about Lear and his knights. She orders Oswald to be ignorant of both the knights and Lear's requests.
- After Kent is banished, he decides to return to Lear in disguise so that he may serve him again. Kent approaches a guarded Lear with his knights, and explains that he is a trustworthy guy. Lear is fooled and therefore obliges.
