  • King Lear decides that he will share his kingdom up between his 3 daughters. Beforehand, he asks all of them to profess their deep love for him. Regan and Goneril stroke his ego and are each given 1/3rd of the kingdom.

  • Edmund, Gloucester's illegitimate son, plots against Edgar, his brother. He writes a fake letter claiming to be an Edgar who wants hifa ther dead.
  • At Goneril's castle, she plots for a way to make King Lear leave, as he is currently staying with her. She complains to Oswald, her steward, about Lear and his knights. She orders Oswald to be ignorant of both the knights and Lear's requests.
  • After Kent is banished, he decides to return to Lear in disguise so that he may serve him again. Kent approaches a guarded Lear with his knights, and explains that he is a trustworthy guy. Lear is fooled and therefore obliges.
