- Aunt Lydia
- There is more than one kind of freedom... Freedom to and freedom from. In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from. Don’t underrate it.
- Aunt Lydia is the most powerful woman in Gilead. The aunts are responsible for training women to be handmaids or wives and Aunt Lydia is ranked highest among them. From the reaction of others we see she is feared by the handmaids (and likely many women).

- Moira
- Moira was Offred's best friend before the events of the book. She was also at the red centre with Offred. Offred thinks she is dead until the commander takes her to Jezebeles. There she sees martha and they talk for the first time in years in the bathroom. Moira is shown to be quite defiant and opinionated

- Commander Waterford
- Commander Waterford is one of the highest ranking commanders in Gilead. He is also Offreds commander. Initially he seems to be a rule follower but later in the book he invites Offred into his office and they play scrabble, something strictly forbidden due to reading being required. Although he is one of the more privileged people in Gilead he seems unhappy with the state of Gilead.
