  • The Fatimid Arabs started destroying churches and killing pilgrims. Seljuk Turks took over Jerusalem from the Fatimid. They started to harass pilgrims and march on the Christian city of Constantinople.
  • LETS ATTACK THE CHRISTIAN CITY OF CONSTANTINOPLE TO SEE IF WE CAN TAKE OVER AND GAIN MORE POWER!
  • The Byzantine people asked Pope Urban II for help. He willingly helped the people.
  • I will help you guys. The people that help fight, your sins will be cleansed.

  • After the popes public announcement , many people decided to join. The first group of crusaders left with a leader called Peter the Hermit.
  • The first military crusade was very successful. The crusaders won this because of one small advantage; they took the Muslim kingdoms by surprise. By 1099, the crusaders had captured Jerusalem. They had also established four crusader states in the Holy Land. The crusaders turned back the Turks' advancements on Constantinople. 
  • In 1147-1149, the second crusade happened.#160; King Louis and the German emperor organize the second crusade. However this crusade was not successful. Most of the reasons#160;why this crusade did not go well was because of communication. For example;the crusaders leaders argued. They weren't able to get help from the locals. This led to Saladin recapturing Constantinople.

  • The third crusade began in 1189. This crusade was called "Crusade of the Kings" because it was organized by rules of England. Richard I was the leader of this crusade. He won important victories and developed a courteous relationship with Saladin.
  • The fourth crusade was led by Pope Innocent III. Most of the crusaders were made up of children. This is why this crusade was called the  "Children's Crusade." After the fourth crusade there were other crusades. However basically none of them made it to the Holy Land.
