How about slavery is protected south of the compromise line.
Lincoln won the majority of electoral votes, 180 of 303. He also won 40 percent of the popular vote, the other 30 went to Douglas. Lincoln's name didn't even appear on a ballot in the south, but he won every northern state.

Lincoln compromised with the Republicans and they said they wouldn't disturb slavery as it was. Many in the South did not trust them, they thought their rights wouldn't be protected. In December 1860, South Carolina decided to leave the Union.
Reactions to Secession
I only see that a fearful calamity is upon us in the future.
When more southern states were leaving the union, Senator John Crittenden proposed to protect slavery south of the set line by the Missouri Compromise. Southerners didn't like that.
Presidential Responses
I hope nothing bad happens
I wonder what's going to go on
Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia joined South Carolina in February 1861. They formed a new government and called themselves the "Confederate States of America" and chose Jefferson Davis as their president. They refused to enact the Fugitive Slave Act and denied equal rights to Southern states. They were justified in leaving the Union.
The Southerners welcomed the secession. Robert E. Lee was worried about the future, as he says "I see only that a fearful calamity is upon us." Most of the Northerners were glad the South left the Union. Lincoln's issue was "whether in a free government the minority have the right to break up a government whenever they choose."
Lincoln won the election, but wasn't considered president yet. James Buchanan wrote to the senate saying the South had no right to secede and he had no power to stop them. While getting ready for Inauguration, North and South were wondering what would happen, now secession was not permitted.
