Frederick Douglass meets his old acquaintance Sandy Jenkins. She gives him advice about what he should do, Douglass takes it in and she then entrusts him with a magic root to help him. She tells that with it he would never be whipped again, and so Douglass will return back to the fields.

As Douglass is doing his work, Covey enters the stables with a long rope waiting to start a fight with him. The two of them fight and Covey then looks for someone to assist him. Eventually Douglass wins the fight after a long two hours and wasn't whipped at all

Climax
Douglass reflects his choices in the fight and realizes how much of a change and self confidence it has given him. He takes in his new strength and his feeling that he isn't just a slave anymore. The fight was one of the biggest turning points in Douglass's life.
