Charlie Gordon is a mentally disabled 37 year old in a special education class who is chosen for a program designed to increase intelligence. Algernon, a mouse, has started this experiment and has shown increased intelligence.
Climax
Charlie begins on the program by getting operated on and his intelligence begins to increase with the help of his teacher, Ms. Kinnian (who he falls in love with) and doctors.
Falling Action
Charlie's newfound intelligence lets him understand that his former friends weren't actually his friends, they were just making fun of him. This comes to a climax where at a party Charlie is made fun of and belittled.
Resolution
Charlie gets extremely smart, smarter then the scientists that started the experiment. He is mad at the scientists for treating him like a lab rat. He conducts his own experiment and realizes that he will lose his intelligence and revert back to how he was.
Algernon becomes lethargic, stops eating food, and dies. Charlie realizes he has the same fate and he begins losing his intelligence and memories.
Charlie becomes similar to his original state and loses all of his gained intelligence. People that once made fun of him realize that even people that are stupid are people too and defend him from ridicule. He leaves New York leaving it a better place then before.
