  • It starts with the XYZ Affair.
  • We have to meet with the French minister.
  • The French only agreed to meet if the U.S gave them money. Because of this the Americans felt a new sense of nationalism.
  • Talleyrand will only meet if you pay us.
  • The Alien and Sedition Acts were results of the XYZ Affair, meant to keep the French away. Alien act made it more difficult yo become a citizen, the Sedition Act made it illegal to make defamatory statements about the government.
  • The Alien and Sedition Acts will be helpful.
  • Years later, after the anger caused by the Alien and Sedition Acts, the Louisiana Purchase was made. It's important because it went against Jefferson's federalist beliefs but it was a bargain.
  • The U.S began to believe that expansion was their destiny and continued to expand. But little did they know it would bring about more conflict
  • This is our destiny. We must expand.
  • A conflict caused by expansion was the War of 1812, the British were trying to restrict trade. The U.S was able to stop the British leaving them with a new sense of pride.
