- My environment ranges from virtually pristine Antartic territory and rainforests to degraded industrial areas of major cities. Forty distinct Ecoregions have been identified across my mainland and islands. Central Australia has a very dry climateThis dry and warm environment and exposure to cyclones, makes me particularly vulnerable to climate change -- with some areas already experiencing increases in wildfires and fragile ecosystems.
- The number of threatened species rose eight percent since 2016 and climate change is increasing pressure on every ecosystemClimate change is exacerbating pressures on my ecosystem and I now has more foreign plant species than native, according to the highly anticipated State of the Environment Report.Number of listed threatened species rose 8% since 2016 and more extinctions are expected in the next decade.
- The Australian Government has introduced the Climate Change Bill 2022. The Bill legislates the nation's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% below 2005 levels by 2030, and net zero by 2050.The legislation strengthens accountability through an annual statement by the Minister for Climate Change to Parliament, and tasks the independent Climate Change Authority to provide advice on Australia's progress towards these targets, and on what Australia's future targets should be.Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said, 'Current issues confronting Australian and global energy markets highlights why this long-term commitment is so important.
