One day in class, the teacher told her students to create a doll that represented their culture
Juan was very excited!
Upon arriving home, Juan told his parents about the project and what he wanted to make.
Juan's parents were confused by this.
I want to create a farm worker, a campesino!
But why a farm worker?
You know there is more to our culture than just working the farms, right?
Juan got upset, he already knew everything about Mexican culture, so why would his parents argue with him?
All the movies show us as working on the fields, so that's what we do!
Just because the movies show us in one way, doesn't mean that's how it is all the time.
Juan's dad went on to grab a few movies and photo books to show him.
Juan's dad went on to show him many videos and pictures of their history, including the ancient Aztec and Mayan civilizations
His dad showed him how Latinos can Actors, doctors, family men, charros, and whatever else they wanted to work!
Because they like to stereotype our people, but its up to us to look further than that and learn about our culture to keep it thriving
Wow! I didn't know any of this! Why don't they show that more on tv?
Juan presented a Charro to class the next week and half the class was surprised about their own culture
Juan still makes an effort to look further than the surface and find out how people actually are
