  • Asim and his group arrived at the Nguenyyiel refugee camp in Ethiopia. Finally, after two and a half years, they found refuge. Asim was now 13 years old. It was very overcrowded in the refugee camp, with nearly 11,000 people. But there was clean water and food, which was better than walking. There were many tents where people slept they slept on rugs and blankets. There were people from all around Southern Sudan, mostly boys. How long are we going to stay here? Asim wondered.
  • There were murmurs all around the camp, that the Ethiopian government changed and they were going to force the camps to close the camp and refugees into the Baro River. After five months they left the camp. Asim wasn't mad, but he knew it would be a long hard journey to wherever they were going next. Fights broke out every day about food. Many people were injured or killed sometimes. He learned in school that the Baro River ran fast. Asim didn't know where they were going to go once they crossed the Baro River, but he knew he would figure it out... The day after, people from the government came and forced them out of the camp. Hundreds of people ran until they got to the Baro.
  • One step at a time. Asim told himself. He also told the group this. He was like a leader now. He made the decisions. Even though he was not the oldest, he was the most mature. He determined how much food each person got and what to do next. He knew where they were going now. They were going to the Ifo refugee camp in Kenya. They were almost halfway there, and almost a year had gone by. It was very hard to even think. But he wondered if his family was alive, and hoped he would see them again. One step at a time.
