  • “You are not here to live. You are here to work — and when you cannot work, you will vanish” (80).
  • “The stench of burning flesh filled the air — this was not a labor camp, this was a factory of death” (85).
  • Walter arrives at the concentration camp after being taken from his home by he Nazis and is immediately forced into labor that could eventually end up ending his life.

  • "You know what they’ll do to me if this is a trick. Why help a Jew escape? You could be shot for speaking to me about this" (140) .
  • “You think I don’t know the risk I’m taking? I’ve seen enough death to want out myself. Maybe I’ve had enough of this place. Maybe I just want to remember I’m still human” (141).
  • In the shadows of Auschwitz, Walter meets a man who might be his only chance to escape — but trusting him could mean death.
