- back in the old days before the Murrumbidgee river was formed, the land was dry. animals were getting thirsty and where dying. every animal was dying of thirst, except the goannas who seemed to be thriving. this was because they had a secret water supply.
- the wife goannas pleaded with the husband goannas to share the water with all the other animals of the land. the husband goannas just refused though, as they where too greedy to share the water.
- the goanna wives didn't know where the water supply was though, all they knew was that it was in the hill. so one brave goanna wife volunteered to stay overnight in the hills to find the water source.
- while in the hills the wife goanna came across some men who brought her to the secret water source. once she was there she had a drink. the men then told her to grab that stick and poke it into the nearby rock, then run. she did that and started sprinting down the hill.
- the wife goanna came sprinting down the hill as the water was rushing ferociously behind her and into the outback desert.
- then the Murrumbidgee river was formed and all the animals where no longer thirsty and had things to drink. the goanna wives ended up leaving their husbands and turned into birds and flew to the end of the river. they are still there today.
