Although they had felt alone before, they now realized they weren’t; they didn’t have to face these issues by themselves. Whatever challenges lay ahead, they were ready to confront them head-on with a new support system they hadn't had before.

  • Hello, and welcome to the first day of critical thinking class! Let's start with roll call.
  • As Alex sat through roll call, they could feel it coming—the inevitable deadname. They wanted to speak up, to correct the teacher, but a knot of anxiety tightened in their chest. What if the teacher made a scene? What if she didn’t respect the change at all? What if the class laughed or whispered behind their back? This would be their first impression at their new school, and they had no clue what to expect.

  • Of course, Alex! Thank you for telling me; I'll change it on the attendance sheet. Ian, in our class, we treat everyone with respect. All people are valued and treated fairly in my room, and I expect you and everyone else to follow that.
