Sergeant Major Morris came to visit the Whites. We are introduced to Mr. White, Mrs. White, and their son Herbert
Sergeant Major Morris tells the Whites about the Monkeys Paw. Mr. White is curious about the paw, Mrs. White is not happy with it and Herbert is afraid of it. Then Mr. White got the paw and wished for 200 pounds to pay off the house.
CONFLICT / THEME
In exchange for the 200 pounds, Herbert died. Mrs. White is now grieving and really depressed. She remembered the paw and forces Mr. White to wish for their son back to life. Then there's a knock on the door.
The theme of the story is you cant defy fate. Fate will rule people and you cant control your own fate.
After the knock on the door, Mrs. White ran to the door since she thought it was Herbert. Mr. White knows it can't be him since he was squished in the machine and is scared to see who is in the door.
Before Mrs. White could open the door, Mr. White wished for his last wish. His last wish was that his son goes back to where he came from.
SUPERSTITION: One superstition is the Rabbit's foot gives you good luck. It's most common in Japan and Asia because people saw a rabbit in the moon. They believed it because back in 600 AD the rabbit would hide in a underground hole. People believed that the rabbit gets closer to benevolent spirits, which is good luck spirits.
CONFLICT: Man Vs Supernatural. Making wishes and a superstiton is considered supernatural.
