This is a demonstration of the Alarm Signal Hypothesis and Behavioural Trade-Off
Hey! What are you up to?
Hey! I'm having a little bit of a problem.
What kind of problem?
Well I'm STARVING and I want to go to the big food patch over there.
Well why don't you?
Even though the big food patch has so much food, there are many predators over there.
Oh no! Why don't you go to the small food patch? There aren't any predators here.
Even though there aren't any predators over there, there isn't enough food.
If you go to the big food patch, maybe you can take frequent breaks to check for predators, like a behavioural trade-off!
What's a behavioural trade-off?
Behavioural trade-off is when you sacrifice one activity for another.
In this case, you would sacrifice eating a lot in order to watch out for predators.
But then I'll have to spend MORE time there in order to eat enough and that will increase my chance of seeing a predator.
Maybe we can go together and take turns looking out for predators!
YES! That way if there is a predator, we can warn each other through an alarm signal and get out of there!
What do you mean by an alarm signal?
The alarm signal hypothesis is the demonstration of a certain behaviour to warn others around me of the predator I see.
That's a great idea!
