- Della wished to buy a Christmas gift for her husband, Jim, but since she didn't have enough money, she sold her hair to afford the present. Now, she’s worried about how Jim will react to her new appearance without her beautiful, long hair.

- I'm not sure if I did the right thing by solding my cherished gold pocket watch belonged to my father and my grandfather in order to buy my wife her present for Christmas.
- Jim is unsure whether Della will appreciate his Christmas gift because he’s concerned that she might be upset upon knowing that he sold a treasured possesion passed down from his father and grandfather to afford it.

- When the moment arrived, they both faced each other with joy, holding the gifts they had bought for one another.

- I appreciate your present for me a lot, but, I'm sorry because I cut my hair short just so I could afford the gift I bought for you which is designed for your watch.

- Della cried as she told her husband how sad and guilty she felt. Jim comforted her, telling her not to feel bad.
