  • I've just turned nineteen, Herr Commandant.
  • Oh, but Switzerland's a beautiful country, I haven't been there, I admit. but from what I hear-
  • He can't be very old, your father, I mean you're only... what? Seventeen? Eighteen years old?
  • ...
  • ...
  • Strange that he chose not to stay in the Fatherland.
  • So your father would be... in his forties, I expect?
  • We're not close, my father and I. Really, we haven't spoken in years.
  • I beg your pardon?
  • And what reason did he give, might I ask, for leaving Germany at the moment of her greatest glory and her most vital need, when it is incumbent upon all of us to play our part in the national revival? Was he tubercular?
  • ...
  • One evening, Lieutenant Kotler joined Bruno, Mother, Father and Gretel for dinner. Lieutenant Kotler and Mother were discussing about his father's whereabouts when Father interrupted and started questioning Lieutenant Kotler about him and his father's age, to which he replied I've just turned nineteen, Herr Commandant.
  • I'm afraid I don't know, Herr Commandant. You would have to ask him.
  • ...
  • Did he go to Switzerland to take the air? Or did he have a particular reason for leaving Germany? In nineteen thirty-eight.
  • After Father learned that Lieutenant Kotler's father was in his forties, Lieutenant Kotler said nothing but continued eating although he didn't appear to be enjoying his food at all. Father's suspicion of Lieutenant Kotler's father emerged as he said he found it strange that he chose not to stay in the Fatherland.
  • Disagreements, Herr Commandant?
  • ...
  • Or perhaps he had.. disagreements.
  • In response, Lieutenant Kotler looked around the table as if he owed everyone an explanation, and quickly said that he and his father haven't spoken in years and were not close. Father inquired as to why and guessed some reasons.
  • Herr Comandant, I can assure you-
  • Never mind. Perhaps it is not an appropriate conversation for the dinner table. We can discuss it in more depth at a later time.
  • ...
  • It is not an appropriate conversation for the dinner table.
  • Father remarked sarcastically by asking, Did he go to Switzerland to take the air? followed by growing suspicion Or did he have a particular reason for leaving Germany? To which Lieutenant Kotler replied that he did not know and Father would have to ask him. In return, Father commented how difficult it would be to do so.
  • Well, that would be rather difficult to do, wouldn't it? With him being so far away, I mean. But perhaps that was it. Perhaps he was ill.
  • Father confronted Lieutenant Kotler about his father's beliefs, as he continued on with a statement and asked if Lieutenant Kotler had informed his superiors of his father's views.
  • With government policy. One hears tales of men like this from time to time. Curious fellows, I imagine. Disturbed. some of them. Traitors, others. Cowards too. Of course you have informed your superiors of your father's views, Lieutenant Kotler?
  • Father then brushed it off and said it wasn't appropriate for the dinner table as Lieutenant Kotler anxiously tried to rid of any suspicion, however was interrupted by Father's sharp tone.
