The birth of Hobbes! Raised by his wealthier uncle in an uneasy household, after his father had a brawl in front of the church.
Although Hobbes was not born into wealth, he spent much of his life working alongside them. This allowed his view of government as one that only exists through the consent of the people.
Which one?
Because Hobbes wasn't always a noble advisor, he recognized the damage the average civilian can cause to an oppressor. Because of this he wanted to prevent any war at all costs
Hobbes was a true renaissance man! He was multifaceted in paths such as scholastic logic and several arts degrees. He studied Greek and Latin literature which helped in his effort to translate classical pieces.
Ave, filia Jovis, Da mihi dulce carmen Ad celebrem sanctum genus deorum, Qui in aeternum vivent, Filii coeli et terrae, Noctem obscuram, Mare salsum.
But Hobbes was what people call nowadays, as a bootlicker. In this case he supported the standing system of absolutism rather than the anti royalist sentiment. But he was different, in how he thought the government should supply the people with the goods they need.
All in all, he was known as a mechanical materialist. But what does that even mean? Well, it is the idea that only material objects are real, and argues this in the opening chapter of Leviathan. He talks of the principal of inertia, which founded the idea of mechanical philosophy. It is the idea of geometry and physics reacting to the world in a logical manner.
Everything must be material. So, everything is ultimately reduced to material bodies in motion.
