¨Listen to me, Pony. You didn't do anything. It was your friend Johnny that had the knife...¨
I had it. I had the knife. I killed bob.¨
This scene at the beginning shows how the socs act toward the greasers for the first time to the readers. The group of socs here shows dialogue with them acting confident as if they were better than ponyboy. This just further shows the rivalry between the two groups.
The dialogue between Ponyboy and Johnny shows they feel bad that they started the fire, and that they knew they needed to save the kids inside the church. The way they speak tells the readers how they are calm and don't second guess running in to save the children inside, making the scene stronger because it allows the situation to be more urgent to the readers.
Ponyboys insistence that he killed Bob shows the readers he is trying to convince himself that Johnny isn't dead. The dialogue was chosen to show to the readers what a daze Ponyboy is, and that he is seriously struggling from Johnny's death.
