  • The Butler Act was overturned by congress today.
  • On May 5th, 1925, Scopes was caught and arrested, in violation of the Butler Act. He was then ready for a trial which was to take place later on.
  • The trial began finally on July 10. William Jennings Bryan argued for the prosecution, while Clarence Darrow served as the defense attorney for Scopes. After 11 days, John Scopes was prononced guilty and fined S100.

  • In 1967, Tennessee lawmakers overturned the statute, thereby legalizing discussions of evolutionary concepts in the state’s public schools. So Scopes' conviction was overturned.
