  • 1. Creation of Gilgamesh and Enkidu
  • Come with me Enkidu to Uruk.
  • I am the best and strongest king!
  • 2. Gilgamesh and Enkidu Meet
  • You think you can defeat me?
  • 3. Preparations for Journey
  • You are my son now too. Bring my son back to me.
  • In the city of Uruk, there was a cruel and arrogant king named Gilgamesh who was one third man and two thirds god. The people of Uruk asked the gods to create someone to stop Gilgamesh. The gods created a wild man named Enkidu who was equal in strength to Gilgamesh. When Gilgamesh found out about Enkidu, he summoned the temple prostitute to entice Enkidu. After laying with each other for seven nights, Shamhat asked Enkidu to travel with her to Uruk.
  • 4. Journey to the Cedar Forest
  • Shamash, protect us. Our names will be remebered for generations.
  • As Shamhat and Enkidu traveled to Uruk, Enkidu found out about Gilgamesh and his tyranny. Enkidu proclaimed he would stop Gilgamesh in battle. Once they arrived in Uruk, Gilgamesh and Enkidu fought like bulls, until Enkidu proclamied Gilgamesh the strongest. Then the two embraced. Soon after, Gilgamesh proposed his idea of traveling to the Cedar Forest, and Enkidu told him about the monster Humbaba. The two decided they would go to the forest to defeat the monster.
  • 5. The Battle with Humbaba
  • Neither of you will grow old, Gilgamesh will burry you.
  • Gilgamesh informed the elders and his mother, Ninsun about their journey. The elders and Ninsun were very fearful of the idea. Ninsun implored Shamash the sun god to help Gilgamesh and Enkidu on their journey. After, she embraced Enkidu and called him her son. The elders soon accepted Gilgamesh's idea, as long as Enkidu would be the guide.
  • 6. The Bull of Heaven
  • Gilgamesh and Enkidu soon set out on their journey to the Cedar Forest atop Mount Lebanon. Each night, Enkidu would keep watch while Gilgamesh slept. Gilgamesh would dream about a huge mountain falling, a fearsome bull bellowing, a wind strom crashing and a soaring eagle. Enkidu interpreted the dream as hope that Shamash would protect them and they would slay Humbaba.
  • As Gilgamesh and Enkidu entered the Cedar forest, Humbaba began to roar and surround the two. Both were frightened, and believed Shamash the sun had abandoned them. However, Shamash heard their prayers and sent seven winds to buffet Humbaba. Humbaba was unable to move, and cursed Enkidu before Gilgamesh cut off the head of the monster.
  • After killing Humbaba, Gilgamesh and Enkidu return to the city of Uruk. The goddess of love, Ishtar saw Gilgamesh and fell deeply in love with him. She asked him if he would marry her, but he declined. Ishtar was furious and went to her father, Anu to send the down the Bull of Heaven to kill Gilgamesh. However, Enkidu and Gilgamesh kill the bull, then Enkidu throws a leg of the bull at Ishtar. Gilgamesh was extermely happy, and the people of Uruk celebrated with their king. But that night, Enkidu had a ominious dream.
