Hi Ameera. I learned some really cool things about graphic novels at the training last week that I think we could use in our ELA classes this year!
Graphic novels aren't very challenging for 5th graders.
Questions from colleagues...
That's what I thought until I heard this training.
There were so many benefits to students who read graphic novels. I am going to share what I learned at the PD tomorrow. You should sign up for my session
Wow. What did you hear?

The Power of Graphic Novels
Graphic novels have a great way of engaging the reader in difficult topics and making the topics approachable and accessible to readers
Graphic novels are relevant and engaging ways to read, making them great for reluctant readers.
The combination of text and images can help reduce reading anxieties.
It isn't that graphic novels aren't' challenging. We as educators need to realize their complexity and embrace their relevance in the lives of our students.
That's a great question. Students need to practice different methods of comprehension, using not just text but pictures to determine the plot, conflicts, and larger messages being presented.
But won't reading graphic novels make their comprehension go down?
Graphic novels can dramatically help improve reading development for students struggling with language acquisition. It is not always about what students are reading, but they are reading often.
But what about my kids with IEPs, 504s, speech and language impairments, reading disabilities, ELs?
That's a great question too.Research from the University of Oregon found that comic books averaged 53.5 rare, or more complex, words per 1,000. That's more than children's books which average 30.9 and even adult books at 52.7.
But what about their vocabulary? If they aren't reading the classics how will they learn new words?
Look at what Mrs. Trimble gave us as our next book to read for class!!!
Yes! I am so excited and can't wait to read it!
I hope our teacher gives us a graphic novel too!
After class the next day in the hallway
Isn't that the new I survived Graphic Novel?
