In 1519 Pineda set out from Jamaica to map the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He became the first European to observe the Texas coast. He did not finish his mission.

Cortes was sent to present day Mexico by the governor of Cuba in 1519. Upon Aarrival the Aztecs viewed Cortes and his men as gods because of their horses, firearms, and metal armor.

In 1526 Cabeza de Vaca was exploring Florida as a member of the Narvaez expedition. This expedition was lost and forced to build boats to sail back to Mexico in 1528. The boats were caught in a hurricane and Caabeza de Vaca and several men were shipwrecked on Galveston Island. The Karankawa gave them food and shelter.
The Three G's
Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and more than 1000 men went in search for the city in 1540. They discovered the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Ocean and Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, but never found the city of gold.
When La Salle arrived in Texas in 1685, he was already a famous french explorer. He had explored the length of the Mississippi River. He concinced the King of France to establish a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River. La Salle set out with four ships full of supplies and colonists. He lost one ship to pirates along the way. In 1685 he arrived at the Matagorda Bay in Texas. He built a fort that got attacked by the local Karankawa tribe
