In " The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is that fear and suspicion are destructive. To start, Charlie shoots his neighbor Pete Van Horn because he is scared and thinks he is a monster. This shows that just because of the things that happened before that had frightened him made him act without thinking affecting him and the people around him. Additionally, according to Charlie on page 84 states " Its the kid... It's Tommy, also it said, " Charlie and Steve are working together." This confirms that just because they were scared something would happen to them they would blame a child or other neighbor that they have known for years to try to get everyone from from making you the scapegoat and pinning it on someone else. Finally, at the end of the story they are fighting, and Figure 1 says to Figure 2, " Just stop a couple of machines and radios and telephones and lawnmowers.... throw them in darkness for a couple of hours and you sit and watch the pattern. In conclusion, fear and suspicion can make people turn on each other, go against each other, and have hatred for one another which is why that theme is perfectly illustrated by the story.
