Storyboard Text

  • Richard has been very hungry. He decided to make lunch. And now he is going to eat his corn.
  • The food begins in the mouth, where he chews to break it up. Then, the food travels down the esophagus. Smooth muscles in the esophagus push down food which is called peristalsis.
  • After traveling down the esophagus, the food enters the stomach , where it is broken down by chemical and mechanical digestion.
  • After leaving the stomach, the food travels down the small intestine. Here, nutrients from food are absorbed. The pancreas (orange) aids in digestion by producing enzymes that digest carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The pancreas also produces hormones to regulate blood sugar.
  • The liver produces bile which breaks down fat. In the small insensitive the innersurface is made of villi that help absorb the nutrients. After the nutrients are absorbed it is called chyme.
  • After the small intestine, the chyme enters the large intestine. The rest of the indigestible material is moved to the rectum as feces, where it is stored until it leaves through the anus.
