  • The Procedures
  • The Accident
  • Phineas Gage was an average man who was employed by a railroad company. Phineas was very good at what he did and was seen as a nice and experienced person. He was handling the most dangerous part of the railroad business, which are explosives. (Phineas Gage a Gruesome but True Story about Brain Science in class)
  • The Aftermath
  • Phineas Gage's workers would dig a hole and refill it with gunpowder and sand. Formed in a way in which the gunpowder was below the sand, a long rope would be put at the end of it in the gunpowder so it could ignite an explosion. His tamping iron was used to light a spark and then he would run away to avoid getting hurt.
  • The Path
  • One day Phineas had gotten distracted and he must have accidentally ignited the gun powder because it blew up and sent the tamping iron straight up into the air at high speeds.
  • The Summary
  • The tamping iron went through the head of Phineas Gage as it landed 2 to 30 meters away from him. Phineas lay there for several minutes after the accident.
  • Moments later Phineas was speaking perfectly with large amounts of blood loss (obviously). He was rushed to see his doctor by carriage with his co-workers assisting him on the way. (npr.org section 4)
  • Dr. Harlow who had been working with Phineas for a long time examined Phineas' brain. He initially thought Phineas would be experiencing his last moments on Earth very soon but he ended up having an open brain injury. Had it been a closed brain injury his brain would have swelled up and he would have died. Phineas was a very changed man, as he ended up getting fired due to his rudeness but he lived 12 years after the accident.
