  • The British troops were still in the colonies, and the Townsend Act was creating protests and massacres. Colonists became self-governing and separated themselves from Britain.
  • American natives grew resentment for the British, and so the Boston Tea Party occurred. They dumped the products from Britain into the Boston Harbor.
  • The First, and soon later Second Continental Congress formed to declare rights of colonists. Some of these leaders included George Washington, John and Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson.
  • On July 4, 1776, America signed the Declaration of Independence. Some leaders from the Continental Congresses lead the colonies as they became independent from Britain.
