- On a hot evening in Padua, they carried him up onto the roof, where he could gaze out over the city. Everyone leaves except Luz and the soldier.
- The soldier helps Luz During her night shifts, the soldier assists Luz by taking the temperature of other patients as she rests.
- Soon, he will be well enough to return to the front lines. He and Luz go to the local cathedral to pray, intending to marry. Unfortunately, tradition requires that an upcoming marriage be disclosed on three consecutive Sundays, and he does not have enough time before he must leave Padua.
- The soldier travels to America, while Luz settles in Pordonone and establishes a hospital. She sleeps with the major of an Italian battalion while there. She informs the soldier that their relationship is over because she intends to marry the major. She goes on to say that, while she adores the soldier, their relationship is doomed. The major, on the other hand, does not marry Luz. The soldier does not respond to her letter. He catches gonorrhea after sleeping with a salesgirl in the back of a cab.
- After the soldier returns to the front. Luz writes the soldier letters  which he does not receive until after the armistice. She expresses her longing for him in her letters.
- They reunite, but Luz refuses to accompany him unless he has a decent job. They argue about the soldier's desire for her to join him sooner. Although they kiss goodbye at the train station, they have not reconciled after their dispute, and the soldier is disappointed that they must split in this manner.
