  • I don’t have done any homework,sir.
  • Yes, sir.
  • All right, sit down.
  • Swaminathan, where is your homework?
  • Why, headache?
  • I am not shouting, sir; this is my ordinary voice, which God has given me. How can I help it?
  • Then, SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN!
  • Don’t shout. I can hear you quite well.
  • Why did not Columbus come to India, sir?
  • Such a great man. Would he have not known the way?
  • Vasco da Gama.Vasv
  • He lost his way. But why are you asking this?
  • Swaminathan, you are shouting again.
  • That’s what they say.
  • I am not shouting, sir. How can I help my voice, given by God?
  • Vasco da Gama
  • Sir, was Vasco da Gama the very first person to come to India?
  • Yes, sir.
  • Vasco da Gama
  • When Samuel started inspecting the home lessons, Swami thanked God that finally now he would be beaten, but that day Samuel was very gentle and tolerant, so he did nothing. Samuel just told him to sit and Swami sat down, wondering what had come over Samuel. Then, the period came to an end, and Swami felt desolate.
  • Sit down you idiot. If you get up again I will cane you.
  • You needn’t shout. Has your headache made you mad?
  • Ok, now the last few minutes I will ask questions from you all, so tell what is the date of Vasco da Gama’s arrival in India?
  • I have no headache now, sir.
  • 1648, December 20.
  • After the end of first period, the last period was also taken by Samuel. The period began at 3:45 and ended at 4:30. Swami was thinking acutely about how to provoke Samuel and make him angry to get beaten by him. When only half an hour was left, Swami started asking silly questions in very loud tone. Samuel got angry and told him to shut up and sit down. Swami felt happy at his success and thereafter waited for his second chance to provoke him.
  • All right; come here.
  • Now, I am going to put a few questions on the Mughal period.SWAMI YOU SIT DOWN.
  • What did I say I would do if you got up again?
  • You said you would cane me and peel the skin off my knuckles and make me press it on my forehead.
  • I want to answer, sir.
  • After making Samuel angry once, his second chance occurred when Sankar of the first bench asked a question. Before teacher could answer he shouted his own silly answer from back. Everybody looked at him and the teacher was puzzled by his behaviour.
  • Open your hand you little devil.
  • Will these do or do you want some more?
  • In the last fifteen minutes of the period, Swami felt that with a little more effort Samuel could be made to deserve dismissal and imprisonment. After finishing the reading section, Samuel proposed to spend the remaining few minutes asking questions. He ordered the whole class to put away the books and asked someone in the second row to answer. Swami shouted his silly answers again and told that he does not have any headache now. Samuel told him that he will beat him if he answers again. Swami felt happy at the Samuel’s promise.
  • Samuel started asking questions from the Mughal period and as soon as he saw Swami getting up he empathically told him to sit down. But Swami argued with him and reminded him his promise. The teacher called him to get caned. Swami left his seat joyfully and hopped to the place.
  • The teacher took out his cane from the drawer and at the top of his voice, told him to open his hands and whacked three wholesome cuts on each palm. After half a dozen the teacher asked that does he want more, he did not take his hand back and got two more. The bell rang, Swami’s hands were bleeding. He picked up his books, took out the letter lying in his pocket and ran to the headmaster’s room.
