On August 24, 1814, British forces marched into Washington D.C. and set fire to several key buildings including the White House and the Capitol. President James Madison and other government officials had to evacuate the city.

The battle started on September 13, 1814, at the US Fort McHenry near Baltimore. The American fort that guarded Baltimore Harbor was bombarded for 27 hours straight. The attack failed, and on the morning of September 14th, the US flag still flew above Fort McHenry (this inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner).

On January 8, 1815, the British army invaded the city of New Orleans. Andrew Jackson assembled a last-minute militia that included Native Americans, pirates, freed African Americans, and ordinary citizens to defend the city. Jackson wins the battle and becomes a war hero.
