- It starts off with the narrator trying to convince us that he is not insane despite having killed a man over his deformed eye
- The narrator lives in the same building as an old man who has a disturbing eye. The narrator believes it is a evil vultures eye with a film covering it.
- Over the next couple of days the narrator plots to kill the old man to get rid of the vulture eye. Each night he entered the old man's room with a lantern until he sees the eye.
- One night, the old man wakes up and screams. Then the narrator pulls the man off the bed and suffocates him until he can no longer hear the old mans heart beat.
- Called by a neighbor, the police show up at the house saying someone called reporting a scream. The narrator said to them that it was him that screamed and that the old man was out of town.
- Finally, the narrator allows the police to come in and check inside. When they don't find anything and they are about to leave the narrator believes he hears a ticking noise that grows louder. He believes that it is the old mans heart and breaks down and confesses to the police.
